Monadhock. What in the world??! The BHM hired this firm to create a special permanent exhibit in the museum. The exhibit is an immersive, virtual theatre presentation focused on Beaufort’s “Evolution to Revolution” theme. It highlights the struggles between Loyalists and Patriots just prior to the American Revolution. 

Earlier this year, the Beaufort History Museum was honored to be the recipient of a $125,000 grant from the SC 250 committee. The purpose of this award is to create events for Beaufort, students, and visitors to showcase Beaufort’s role in the Revolutionary War. Plans are still developing. The major effort will be to create an immersive theater experience. This video will show the differences in opinion and factors that led to SC colonists to be on the side of the Patriots or the Loyalists. Other exciting events will be possible through this generous grant. Stay tuned.

The activities that are the subject of this video and other events have been financed in part with state funds from the SC American Revolution Sestercentennial Commission (SC250). In a symbolic gesture of unity, remembrance, and patriotism, the Charleston 250 Committee will present an historic Liberty Tree sapling to the Beaufort 250 Committee on Tuesday, July 2, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. The presentation will take place at the historic Beaufort Arsenal, located at 713 Craven Street in downtown Beaufort, and marks a meaningful moment in the lead-up to the 250th anniversary of American independence.

The Liberty Tree sapling, a direct descendant of the last-known standing trees that once stood as powerful symbols of colonial resistance during the American Revolution, will be officially handed off to Mayor Phil Cromer and theCity of Beaufort during this commemorative event. The ceremony highlights the collaboration between communities across South Carolina as they prepare for the Sestercentennial—a nationwide celebration of 250 years of American history and heritage.

“This sapling represents more than just a tree—it is a living connection to our shared past and the ideals that fueled our nation’s founding,” said Rich Thomas from the Beaufort 250 Committee. “We are proud to pass it on to the City of Beaufort as a symbol of liberty and remembrance.”

John McCardell, our esteemed local historian, will lead a small bus tour of the historical homes on The Point and The Bluff. Cocktails will be served mid tour. The refreshment stop will be at the summer residence of Barbra Streisand when she was here in Beaufort filming "The Prince of Tides."

March 18, 2025 is the bicentennial of Lafayette's visit to Beaufort during his farewell tour of America. July 4, 2026, is the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The museum is hard at work on planning special commemorations of both these historic events. Look for updates in the coming weeks.

Dr. James Shinn, associate professor of history at USCB, and two of his students recently collaborated with the Beaufort History Museum to develop field study guides for all grade levels. Working under the supervision of Dr. Shinn, Liz Peck and Aiden De la Torre created a guide for each grade, one through 12. These guides align the museum's content with grade level South Carolina standards. These guides will be posted on the website, making them available to all educators who are planning a trip to the museum.

"A Piece of Our Past" included items from our archives; artifacts and treasures collected over the years. Great attendance helped the Beaufort History Museum in its mission to preserve and showcase the historical legacy of our community. The event was held Thursday, March 14th, at the home of Phil and Amelie Cromer, Beaufort.
