Beaufort Legend Confederate General Stephen Elliott To Be Featured at March 3 History Lecture

Beaufort, SC- February 13, 2020 - Beaufort History Museum will present a lecture on Confederate General Stephen Elliott at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, March 3 at First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, located at the corner of North and Church Streets. The Speaker is D. Michael Thomas, author of ConfederatGeneral Stephen Elliott: Beaufort Legend, Charleston Hero.

            Admission to the lecture is free.  A donation of $5 is suggested and reservations are required.  Registration is opens February 17.  To sign up CLICK HERE.  Please print the ticket and bring to the event.  (Lectures sell out.  Those with tickets will be admitted first.)  Funds collected will be used to support ongoing Museum programs and the renovation of the Exhibit Hall currently underway. Phase I of the renovation is now open and planning for Phase II is underway.

            A South Carolina native, Thomas is the author of two well-regarded books.  In addition to his work on Stephen Elliott he has also written Wade Hampton’s Iron Scouts: Confederate Special Forces, published in 2018.

            Thomas graduated from The Citadel in Charleston, SC with a B.A. in History and is a Vietnam veteran with active duty service in the navy from 1968-1972.  He is a life-long student of Southern history with special emphasis on the War Between the States.  He spent five years in the banking sector and 31 years in international trade before retiring in 2008.

            While living near Richmond, VA he spent ten years with the Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia serving as a volunteer historical researcher and as a member of the Board of Directors. His research on Chesterfield County veterans from Colonial times to the Gulf War led him to author numerous newsletter articles on those veterans and their service.

Beaufort History Museum has evolved to focus specifically on the history of the Beaufort District. It strives to manage and display artifacts and documents held by the City of Beaufort, telling the compelling stories of this area from the early 16th Century to the modern era.
